BACKGROUND

This is a new shared project from Cork Traveller Visibility Group
(TVG) and Cork Traveller Women’s Network (CTWN), two Traveller led
community development organisations working for Traveller rights in
Cork City. This project aims to develop an accessible Traveller
community archive focusing on photos and other items celebrating
Traveller culture and activism in Cork City.

PLACE OF WORK

The Contracted Traveller community archivist will be based in Cork
Traveller Visibility Group’s office at *
Lower John Street, Cork. Depending on remote working requirements and
internal policies, the worker might be asked to work from home when
necessary, and might be asked to do some travel within Cork to attend
meetings and look at relevant material. Expenses for any additional
travel will be reimbursed.

CONTRACT / SALARY SCALE

The position is for one day a week (8 hours a week). The contract
commences in January *, and ends in January

THIS IS A SELF-EMPLOYED ROLE, RATHER THAN AN EMPLOYED ROLE. TVG ARE
WILLING TO ASSIST THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WITH SETTING UP AS
SELF-EMPLOYED, IF NECESSARY.

OVERVIEW

We are seeking an Archivist to collate, catalogue, digitise and
display a collection of photographs and materials relating to the
history of Traveller culture and activism in Cork linked with
collection materials gathered by Cork Traveller Women’s Network &
Cork Traveller Visibility Group.

The collection documents the history and traditions of the Traveller
community in Cork and as such has the potential to fill gaps in the
archival representation of this community.

JOB DESCRIPTION

* Develop an Archive and Collections Policy taking into account
ethical and legal considerations including child protection, data
protection and access
* Collate images and documentation to add to the existing bank of
resources collected over a *-year period by the
TVG and CTWN.
* Identify and assess the broad categories of items which comprise
the collections.
* Categorisation and labelling of collection objects, after gaining
consent from their subjects.
* Digitisation of materials into an online searchable resource which
is accessible to Travellers in Cork.
* Contribute towards showcasing the images at a launch event at the
Cork Public Museum, with the resource available to the public
thereafter.
* Provide regular verbal and written updates to the Project
Co-Ordinators throughout the project and engage with CTWN & TVG team
to support the above.
* Make recommendations for the full cataloguing, preservation and
long-term storage of the collections
* Contribute towards videos or other social media postings which
will increase awareness of the collections and the community which
they document
* Work closely with the Traveller community archivist to develop the
above and support the development of skills & knowledge around
archiving.
* Engage with external organisations as appropriate to support the
above

PERSON SPECIFICATION

* Professional qualification in Archives and Records Management
(essential).
* Knowledge of archival cataloguing standards and practices
(essential).
* An ability to work in a co-operative and collaborative manner
(essential).
* An enthusiastic approach, interest in the above project, with a
dedication to meeting project objectives within agreed timeframes
(essential).
* Knowledge of legal & ethical considerations around community
archive development including GDPR or willingness to learn
(essential).
* Respect for Travellers as an ethnic group and a commitment to
upholding equality for margainalised groups (essential)
* Excellent communication skills written relevant to this post
(essential)
* Experience of supporting the development of a community archive
(desirable)
* Experience of working with the Traveller community (desirable)
* Knowledge of Traveller history and culture that is specific to
Cork (desirable).
